Boredom in Dogs

What does a bored dog look like?

The dog might be pacing or panting, or they might even be drooling or whining. But more often than not, you do not know that your dog is bored until you have left him alone for awhile. That is when you come home to all kinds of things like shredded toilet paper, gnawed shoes, or savaging in cupboards.

Bored dogs often use their energy in less than desirable ways. Providing your dog with toys is a valuable way to keep them happy and stimulated. When dogs are presented with a challenge or a puzzle, they are often less likely to bark or chew inappropriately. We can all use some help with behavioral problems, right?!

Ways you can challenge your dog:

1. Play more often. When you tire your dog out they will have less extra energy to burn. It sounds simple, but if your schedule does not include daily playtime for your dog, try adding it in.

2. Find a game your dog loves. Dogs are like humans in that they have their own favorites, likes, and dislikes. Not all dogs like the same games and toys. Try experimenting to see what gets your dog excited and playing.

3. Challenge your dog with a toy. If regular balls and bones are not enough to keep your dog out of trouble, consider giving them a puzzle toy. While many toys are great for keeping dogs busy, sometimes your dog needs a little more stimulation or challenge. Now-a-days, there are many puzzle toys to choose from.

Ways to Beat Doggie Boredom

Many people wonder if their dogs can get bored and the answer is YES, they can. Imagine if you were locked alone in a house all day with nothing to do! Boredom is very real and it is a very big problem for dogs today.

Here are five ways to defeat boredom-for good.

1. New Tricks - One of the best ways to show love and spend quality time with your dogs is to teach them new tricks. It will take some time and practice, but it will provide great mental stimulation and help keep your dog engaged.

2. Physical Exercise - Running and playing with your dog is another great way to fight boredom. Fetch, wrestling, or racing are simple ways to tire out your dogs before you leave so they will take a long nap when you go instead of pacing around an empty house.

3. Puzzle Games - You can find lots of puzzle games that will keep your dog entertained. But, if you want to save some money, you can simply put some food or treats into a box that your dog must open to eat.

4. Socialization - Meeting new dogs and new people is quite an interesting experience for your dog. Boredom is easily defeated when your dog is making a new friend: canine, human, or otherwise.

5. New Toys - New toys are a great way to keep your dog entertained.

Boredom in Dogs

Many behavior problems in dogs are caused by boredom.

The behavior problems can vary from being destructive, chewing on things, excessive barking, licking on legs or paws, and more.

Can you prevent dog boredom? Yes, you can! Here are some tips:

1. Look at your schedule. If you are gone for more than 9 or 10 hours - that is a long boring day for your dog. Consider doggie daycare. How about a pet sitter or dog walker that comes to your home to look after, walk or play with your dog.

2. Consider what toys your dog likes best and make sure you have them. Not just one - more than one. It is natural for dogs to get bored with one toy.

3. Rotate toys. After you notice your dog is not playing as much with a toy - take it - hide it and introduce something new. Rotate several toys.

4. Give your dog something to do and do it together. A game such as playing fetch with your dog can be rewarding for both you and your dog.

Whatever you do, spend time with your dog. Don't leave him alone too long.
